| Name: | Ahiru (OU) |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1980-05-04 |
Character: Ahiru
Series/Fandom: Princess Tutu
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: Probably around 1 year old, though her human form looks to be maybe physically 12
Gender: Female
Species: Duck
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Appearance:
Ahiru has three forms. There are only two consistencies among the forms: her bright blue eyes and the pendant with the oval red jewel that she wears around her neck. Ahiru's true form is that of a little yellow duck with orange and white legs. She comes with all the usual ducky things – bill, webbed feet, and feathers. One feather curves upward from the top of her head.
While her true form is a duck, Ahiru spends most of her time as a 12-year old girl. She's not very tall, and could easily pass for being a couple of years younger. Ahiru has fluffy red hair that she keeps in a long braid that drops below her posterior. In imitation of the feather that sticks up in her duck form is a spike of red hair that likewise sticks up.
As an ordinary girl, Ahiru is most often seen in one of three outfits. Her school uniform, which is a jacket, top, and skirt outfit. The top is plain white. The jacket and skirt are a very pale grey with royal blue trim. Ahiru's practice clothes consist simply of a leotard and tights. During practice, Ahiru keeps her hair bound under a yellow headband. Casual day-to-day clothes are simply shorts and a shirt in varying shades of yellow.
In Ahiru's final form, she is known as, and draws on the power of, the storybook character Princess Tutu. Princess Tutu is hardly a vision of super heroic power. Rather, she has an ephemeral quality about her. For the most part, Tutu wears a white ballerina costume. The tutu after which she is named is belled out by a frill of stiff, pink lace. The costume is sleeveless, almost like the top half is a ball gown. On her upper arms are white ruffles, and around her wrists are a pair of beaded bracelets.
As Tutu, Ahiru remains a red-head, though most of her hair is bound up beneath a Caesar style headdress of white feathers. The tip of her hair spike becomes frosted with white. On top of her head is a golden crown shaped like a hatched egg.
This is also the only form where the magic pendant changes shape. When Ahiru is Tutu, the pendant gains a setting of white wings around it.
Personality:
Ahiru is one of those kind-hearted sorts who always looks to find the best in people – even those who are her enemies. She loves all of her friends unconditionally. Ahiru will never give up on her friends, no matter how sunken in darkness they may be.
Ahiru is also a bit of a spazz. She's easily excitable and easily startled. When surprised, Ahiru is prone to letting out a quack, which is an unsurprising reaction when considering what Ahiru is. Like most of the girls at the ballet school, Ahiru is most easily frightened when the teacher – Neko-sensei – threatens marriage.
Sometimes Ahiru gets discouraged and thinks that there's nothing she can do to help. She falls into the “so-and-so can do this better than I” mindset. But, no matter how grim the situation, Ahiru never fully loses hope that somehow, someway, things can be made right, even if she's not the one to do it. She is keenly aware that above all, she is just an insignificant duck. And, yet, one little insignificant duck has more hope in her entire body than the entire town put together.
Abilities/Strengths: As a duck, Ahiru has a normal duck's abilities. She's a strong swimmer, capable of holding her breath underwater for a long stretch of time. Because she's so small, she can squeeze into places most can't – for example going through a hole in a window to get into a locked room. Also, Ahiru is capable of short bursts of flight, though she's not very good at it.
Ahiru has no special abilities as a normal girl, unless one counts the ability to be a good friend. She's slightly below average as a dancer, but practices hard and puts forth her best effortto avoid marriage to Neko-sensei.
When Ahiru is Tutu, she gains the grace and skill of the storybook dancer. One could say that in this form Ahiru has magical dancing powers. Instead of waging battle against people, Ahiru solves conflict through dance. When she offers to dance with someone, the immediate environment alters itself into an appropriate stage for the dance, such as a lake becoming solid. Ahiru has the ability to help people find the dance in their heart.
As Tutu, Ahiru has also been able to summon up vines to block people from running away and/or twine together to form a pedestal to stand/dance upon. She has also summoned up enough flower petals to cushion a fall from a second-story window. Twice when there was a crowd around and the people Ahiru loved were in mortal peril, Ahiru's Tutu form appeared as a great swan made of light to the crowd, though the person Ahiru was rescuing continued to clearly see her as Tutu.
Weapons: None.
Weaknesses:
Ahiru's biggest weakness is her pendant. Without it, she is just a duck. She also turns into a duck if she quacks, and must get wet before she can return to human form again (sans clothing). As a duck, Ahiru is bound by the limitations of being a bird. She isn't capable of human speech, so communication is very difficult. She is small creature who can be easily hurt.
As a girl, Ahiru is fairly ordinary. She has no super strength or magic, and is, in actuality, a klutz. There is a definite lack of grace to Ahiru – so much so that for a time she is put back into the apprentice level ballet classes. No one will ever expect great works of genius from Ahiru as she's pretty much of average intelligence.
Princess Tutu is Ahiru's most powerful form, but it is not a form meant for battle. She doesn't use offensive magic to win. Nor does she use physical attacks. Tutu is a magical dancer, and so what she does is dance.
History:
Once upon a time, there was a noble prince who fought a monster raven. The raven was powerful, and the prince could only see one way to stop the beast. The prince cut out his own heart and shattered it, using the pieces to create a seal to bind the monster raven so that it could no longer cause harm. But what does this have to do with Ahiru? Everything.
Once upon a time, there was a little duck. She lived a normal duck's life and was content. Then one day the duck found a prince dancing at her lake. The prince danced beautifully. He was the most magnificent, noble person the duck had ever seen. However, the prince seemed sad to the duck, and she wished with all her heart that she could bring back the prince's smile.
As if in response to her wish, a rather strange man appeared before the duck. He offered the duck a chance to work to make her dream come true. The duck agreed and the mystery man, Drosselmeyer, placed a pendant around her neck.
In a school dorm in Kinkan Town, a girl who was once a duck awoke to greet the morning. In the minds of the girl and the people of the town, the duck had always been a girl named Ahiru.
It was only when Ahiru saw her prince, who was also a student at the school known as Mytho, in danger that she discovered that she was more than just a girl. Her desire to save the prince allowed her to transform into Princess Tutu for the first time. However, once the prince was safe, Ahiru had to run away quickly, for she was turning back into a duck.
On instinct, Ahiru ran back to the lake where she was again found by Drosselmeyer. The old man reminded her that no matter what form she wore, she was just a duck. He also explained to her that the prince was missing his heart, and that if Ahiru wanted to see him smile, then she would have to find and return to him the pieces of his heart.
And so Ahiru's quest began. As she found pieces, Ahiru learned that Princess Tutu was a story character who was destined to disappear in a flash of light if she ever confessed her love for Mytho.
As Ahiru found and returend the pieces of heart one-by-one, the ravens began to stir. When the piece that contained curiosity was found, one of Ahiru's classmates became Princess Kraehe of the ravens and stole the piece. It was eventually recovered and returned to Mytho, but not before Mytho's protector, Fakir, discovered that Tutu and Ahiru were one and the same.
When the piece that contained love was found, Kraehe appeared again and ripped the piece out as it was returning to Mytho. Pulling out that piece returned the awakening prince to his puppet-like state. Drosselmeyer, caring only for leading the prince's and Tutu's stories into tragedy, assisted in setting the stage for Kraehe get Ahiru to confess her love and vanish, and for Fakir to be torn apart by ravens as dictated by his place in the story.
Putting aside their own differences, Fakir and Ahiru made the perilous journey to where Kraehe held the prince captive. They traveled to a lake beneath the town, fighting off ravens. There, Fakir faced his fate and overcame it, shattering the sword that could shatter the prince's heart before Mytho could use it to destroy the piece that contained love.
In the end, though, the battle came down to Tutu and Kraehe – the duck and the raven. If Tutu would confess her love and disappear in a flash of light, Kraehe would return the piece of love. However, Ahiru knew that she couldn't allow herself to vanish because she was the only one who could find the rest of Mytho's heart.
Hoping that the confession only included spoken words, Ahiru decided to tell of her feelings for Mytho through dance. Kraehe joined in this battle to influence Mytho's choice. Each girl wanted the prince to choose her. Kraehe danced with Mytho's love, where as Ahiru did the Pas de Deux alone. She put all of her heart and love into the dance. However, as Mytho felt the first faint stirrings of emotion, there was a flash of light and Ahiru found herself in Econtra.
